The first module of the Master’s Program is an intense time of rigorous academic activity, team meetings and professional career education; all while you’re becoming acquainted with the community and environment. Further, we realize that it may have been a while since you were last in an academic setting or maybe this is your first experience with accounting, quantitative decision and analysis. Class Registration Information

You will register for the fall 2013 semester courses (both Module 1 and Module 2) during Krannert Launch. For both modules, you will be placed in a team of 4-6 students that will share a similar class schedule. If you have any class scheduling constraints, please include this information in the fall registration survey that will be e-mailed summer 2013. Purdue students schedule classes through the on-line registration system “myPurdue”. It is not necessary for you to register on myPurdue prior to Krannert Launch. We will register you for “placeholder” courses during the summer so that fees can be assessed appropriately. Your e-bill will be accessible on myPurdue after fees are determined in mid-July. MGMT 60000 Accounting for Managers - (MBA, MSIA, optional for MSHRM)

Accounting is a language that is used to tell complex financial stories. The accounting information can also be used to analyze complicated decisions. The main objective of this course is to enable consultants, investment bankers, managers at all levels to appreciate, understand, and use the accounting numbers. The major focus of the class is acquiring an understanding of the financial (external) reporting process. Financial reports are prepared in accordance with domestic generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). While GAAP are the product of a country’s regulatory processes, enough commonality exists across countries to allow us to understand the rudimentary financial reporting practices of most countries. The class will also introduce managerial accounting concepts or internal accounting methods. Internal accounting reports provide information for managerial decision-making, planning and performance evaluation. Unlike financial accounting, managerial accounting is not constrained by externally imposed rules or regulations; however, a widely accepted set of frameworks exist.

Managers encounter data daily and regularly base their decisions on it. This course in business analytics develops important skills in data analysis, modeling, and decision making under uncertainty. It is designed to train students to use valid inferences data to inform their decisions. The topics covered in the course include exploratory data analysis, probability, decision analysis, estimation, simulation, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis. Business Analytics emphasizes applications of analytical techniques through its lectures, homework assignments, case analysis and discussions, and computer exercises. Effort is made to translate the statistical results into language understood by non-technical audience and similar communication is expected from students.

This course addresses a selected set of topics focusing on understanding human and organizational processes that facilitate or hinder work performance. The emphasis is on human behavior in relation to management practices with special emphasis on teamwork. What is it that we do as managers that help our people perform better and what do we do that gets in their way? Within this framework, we hope to: 1. Expose you to ideas and literature that will enrich your thinking about these topics; 2. Give you an opportunity to apply some of these ideas to your work experience & cases; and 3. Provide a forum for exploring these issues with other students.

MGMT 69200 Managerial Communication Skills (MCS) - this is a 16 week course - (MBA, MSIA, MSHRM)

During the first two modules, the core course in Managerial Communication provides students with the opportunity to develop presentation skills appropriate for an executive-level audience. Each opportunity has its own set of challenges. Students learn to develop a strong presentation in terms of content, organization, delivery, visuals, and audience awareness. If a student is a confident presenter, skills are sharpened; if a student is uncomfortable speaking in public, skills and self-confidence are given a boost. Self-evaluation and evaluation of peers are encouraged. Since this course has a maximum of 15 students per section, students are given the chance to grow and improve in a workshop environment. Additionally, communication and presentation issues relevant to today’s business professional are discussed in the course.

MGMT 63900 Advanced Auditing and Professional Practice

This course is designed to help students prepare for their professional careers by strengthening their understanding of the CPA’s attest function and familiarizing them with current assurance issues. After finishing the course, students should understand the current state of Enterprise Risk Management and tools for risk evaluation, be able to identify best practices related to external audit, be prepared to manage an audit group, understand the key aspects of being an audit consultant and be able to work with all levels of internal and external audit professionals.

Throughout the course, students will have opportunities to improve their written and oral communication skills, particularly as they relate to communication in the audit setting.  The course will also emphasize the impact of recent and current regulatory actions, including the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, on the audit profession. Students are expected to have already taken MGMT 50600, Auditing, or its equivalent.

MGMT 63400 Business Law for Accountants

This course is designed to help prepare students for their professional careers by familiarizing them with aspects of the law that are directly relevant to the practice of accounting. These topics are not only at work every day in business but are also tested on professional examinations such as the Uniform Certified Public Accounting (CPA) Exam. Specific topics include, but are not limited to, contract law, relevant provisions of the Uniform Commercial Code, bankruptcy, and the legal liability of accountants.  The course will be taught through a mixture of lectures and class discussions.

MGMT 63410 Communications for Accountants

Accountants spend much of their time designing and writing reports, narratives, memos, etc. and explaining those communications to others. They communicate regularly with external investors and creditors, regulators, clients and fellow professionals. This course is designed to help accounting students prepare for their professional careers by helping them develop their written and oral communication skills. The course begins with an overview of the writing process and then moves to document organization and design and how to write with conciseness and clarity. The last half of the course focuses on specific forms of written communication (e.g., letters, memos, reports, email, and essays on professional exams) and oral presentations.

MGMT 63500 Accounting and Information Systems

The purpose is to provide a solid background in the integration of information systems and accounting. Students will examine both manual and automated systems as well as large and small systems. They will listen to presentations by guest speakers conversant with multiple dimensions of accounting information systems creation and use. While there will be exposure to software systems, there is not a heavy emphasis on specific hands-on programming or technology applications.

MGMT 50900 International Accounting

This course introduces upper level undergraduate and master’s students to the international aspects of accounting. Topics include the development of international accounting standards; the diversity of accounting practices across countries; and accounting issues specific to multinational enterprises, such as translation and consolidation of foreign operations and international transfer pricing and taxes.

MGMT 53100 Government/Not-for-Profit Accounting

You will become familiar with financial reporting and accounting principles used in the preparation of Governmental and Not-for-Profit financial statements. You will be provided a sound fund accounting background and how these concepts are applied. Your projects will cover a wide range of topics and exposure you to the accounting practices of a local not-for-profit organization.

MGMT 60200 Valuation and Financial Statement Analysis

This course establishes how to use accounting information to make business and investment decisions. Internally, the information is used to assess performance of units, to evaluate performance of upper-level management, to monitor the firm’s investment and financing decisions, and for comparison purposes with the firm’s rivals. Externally, accounting information is used by financial analysts, investors and (potential) acquirers to assess the value of the firm, by creditors to assess its credit-worthiness, and by regulators.

MGMT 64100 Option and Futures

This is an introductory course on derivatives products. The goal is to help students develop a basic framework for analyzing and using financial instruments. The course covers the most fundamental derivatives products: forwards, futures and options. For each derivatives product, the course answers three questions: how is the product traded, how do firms/individuals use the product to manage their risks, and how do you determine the correct price for the product. The nature of the course is quantitative, yet also emphasizes economic intuition. By the end of the course, students should have a good understanding of features of the most commonly used derivatives products and analytical tools needed to make good managerial decisions.

MGMT 64400 Venture Capital & Investment Banking

This course examines the process of financing the corporation in private and public securities markets. The sequence of topics roughly parallels the life cycle of a typical corporation.  We begin by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of different types of venture financing.  Second, we introduce valuation methods in the venture capital setting.  Third, we study the venture capital financing contracts, known as the term sheets.  Fourth, we discuss the process of exiting investments in young firms.  Fifth, we analyze the investment banking and initial public equity offering process for firms.  Finally, we examine bankruptcy reorganizations should a firm go under.The course consists primarily of case studies supported by readings on the particular case topic.  Students are expected to be prepared for class and will be called upon in class to discuss various issues related to the assigned reading or case study.

This course is designed to assist MS(F) students in the development of their leadership and career management skills.
