Guidelines for Grading and Academic Standing
1. The Krannert Faculty follows the +/- grading policy established by the University and strongly recommends that teachers in the Masters’ programs assign grades using pluses and minuses and adhere to agree upon grading guidelines that specify target grade distributions. The efficacy of this grading system depends upon it being consistently utilized across the Masters curriculum such that faculty employ roughly similar grade distributions. Grade distributions will adhere to the following guidelines:
a) The target grade distribution for all core courses is 35-40% A/A-, 50-55% B+/B’s, 5-10% B-’s, 0-%5 C+ or below resulting in approximately an average Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.35 for each core course where the GPA is calculated as A = 4, A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B = 3.00, B- = 2.70, C= 2.30, C = 2.00, C- = 1.70, D = 1.00 and F = 0.00. For any instructor who teaches more than one section of a core course in a module, the average GPA for that instructor will be calculated by combining sections.
b) The target grade distribution for elective courses is 40-50% A/A- , 40-55% B+/B, 0-10% B-, and 0- 5% C+ or below resulting in approximately an average GPA of 3.42 for each elective course where the GPA is calculated as A = 4, A- = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B = 3.00, B- = 2.70, C+ = 2.30, C = 2.00, C- = 1.70, D = 1.00 and F = 0.00. For any instructor who teaches more than one section of an elective course in a module, the average GPA for that instructor will be calculated by combining sections.
2. Monitoring of adherence to the Grade Policy will be under the auspices of the Management Policy Committee. At the end of each module, the MPC will determine the grade distribution given in each master’s program course. This information will be distributed to each faculty member.
3. Student progress will be reviewed at the end of each eight-week module by the Academic Director of Professional Master’s Programs. As needed, individual faculty members teaching in the Master’s programs may be consulted. Action involving probation may occur anytime subsequent to such reviews, however, action involving withdrawal from the program will occur only at the end of the semester. To remain in good academic standing and to graduate, a student must satisfy four criteria:
a) Have no D or F grades on his/her record. If a student obtains any D or F grades, he/she will be withdrawn from the program. If a student is reinstated to the program, he/she will be on probation, the D or F course must be retaken, and a grade of C or better must be earned before the student can graduate.
b) Maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. If a student fails to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0, he/she cannot graduate. Any student who falls below a 3.0 GPA will be placed on academic probation.
If a student is withdrawn from the program for failing to meet the minimum academic standards and he/she believes extenuating circumstances warrant his/her reinstatement, he/she has the right to petition the Management Policy Committee (MPC) for reinstatement to the program. If a student is reinstated to the program, he/she will be on probation until a 3.0 GPA is earned.
Academic achievement awards will be based on student performance as evidenced by the plus/minus grading system.
- Students who are in the top 5% of their graduating class will be designated Krannert Scholars.
- Students who are in the top 20% of their graduating class will be invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, the national business honor society.
- Students who are in the top 25% of their class in any module in which they take at least 6 credit hours will be recognized on the Dean’s List.
- Students who are in the top 26-40% of their class in any module in which they take at least 6 credit hours will be recognized on the Academic Honors List.
