Tell us about your job as an investment banker.
Investment banking is a broad category for multiple, distinct disciplines. I am part of the traditional corporate investment banking team. We provide deep sector expertise and broad advisory and capital markets capabilities to corporate and financial sponsor clients. I specifically work with clients to structure and raise sub-investment grade debt-financing. However, there are many other disciplines in investment banking including asset management, sales and trading, proprietary investing, etc.
How did Krannert prepare you for your career?
Krannert provided a broad and highly leverageable set of skills that allowed me to adapt quickly once I was in the job market. The practical education that is provided by the curriculum is highly valued by employers and pays off in the short and long term.
What did you enjoy most about your time at Purdue?
Harry's (a speakeasy during the '20s and a favorite gathering spot for the over-21 crowd). But, if I had to pick something less obvious, I think my involvement in a wide variety of student groups on campus
What groups were you involved in and what did you gain from those experiences?
I was involved in the School of Management Council, Interfraternity Council, Student Government and the Exponent Board, to name a few. I think this widened my perspective on campus, helped me accept different points of view and showed me the value of networking.
What advice do you have for current students?
Many students make the error of thinking that the standard processes provided by the school, potential employers and peers are somehow fully efficient in opening doors, providing career opportunities, etc. Get out of the "laboratory!" By this I mean that students need to interact with alumni and other professionals outside of the classroom/curriculum. These interactions are the means from which all great opportunities emerge.
