The need for professional advancement in the face of accelerating change has long been an accepted fact of the medical/scientific community. This is particularly true for the practicing veterinarian. In this economy, veterinary professionals will face an increasingly competitive business environment brought on by new and expensive advances in surgical equipment, medical treatments, computer and communication technology, and the progression of corporate ownership, practice consolidations, and pet superstores. As a consequence, veterinarians who lack a broad-based understanding of business will find the economic viability of their practices challenged.

To help meet those challenges, the Veterinary Practice Management Program has been developed by Purdue’s Krannert School of Management and College of Veterinary Medicine.  It is an intensive, four-module, management education program offering 72 hours of graduate-level instruction on core management issues. The program is held at Purdue University's West Lafayette, Indiana, campus and offers an exciting, academically stimulating course of study. Courses draw upon the faculty and resources of Purdue University's Krannert Graduate School of Management as well as guest faculty selected for their academic credentials and experience in management.

The Veterinary Practice Management Program offers significant value through the following:

1) Guidance from faculty before and after each module; opportunity to chat with previous faculty in subsequent modules.

2) Interaction with fellow professionals and faculty through an integrated cohort approach;

3) Applied learning in facilities tailored towards interaction – classrooms, group work rooms, dining facilities all together.

4) An ability to make a different at your practice right after the first module.

The Veterinary Practice Management Program (VPMP) is designed for veterinarians, veterinary practice technicians, and the practice team manager with business decision-making responsibility that seeks improved profitability, a competitive advantage, and long-term success.  There are significant benefits from having two people from one practice attend the program – to develop a more in-depth plan to help the business side of animal care.

Although prior formal training in management is not assumed in the program course design, individuals with such training will find the courses both broadening and challenging. VPMP is a graduate-level program in practice management.

To benefit fully from the VPMP, participants are to follow the four modules in order: Human Resource Management, Accounting Management, Marketing, and Strategic Thinking. This is important, since during your later modules, you will have opportunities to interact with faculty from previous modules and discuss your progress in implementing the ideas you’ve developed.
