It’s a family affair

Matt Mangum had no intentions of following in his brother's footsteps. Adam Mangum earned an MBA from Purdue in 2005 and works as a marketing manager for Land O'Lakes.

But with an undergraduate degree in linguistics from Brigham Young University, followed by work with an Ukranian interpretation team and a few years with the Defense Intelligence Agency, Matt didn't see any need for a business degree. "In fact, I told my wife when Adam was in school that I could never see myself getting an MBA," he says.

Lesson learned: Never say never.

Matt quickly realized as he worked in operational policy that to achieve his goals, he would need a solid background in business. Once that decision was made, the choice of where to study was easy.

"I talked to Adam about his experience here, and I thought Purdue would be a great fit for me professionally. A lot of things he liked about the school, I knew I would, too," Matt says.

He ran for office during his first year in the program, and was elected president of the Krannert Graduate Student Association (KGSA). "I'm proud of what we were able to accomplish," he says. "I had a great team of vice presidents, and we wanted to increase the number of opportunities for students to be able to pursue their passion, through clubs and experiential opportunities."

Matt also came to campus with a career plan in mind, making a wish list of companies he wanted to pursue. "Shell Oil was at the top of my list because I have an interest in energy and have a lot of family living in Texas," he says.

Through lead recruiter Mary (Slater) Jones (who, ironically, was in his brother Adam's study group at Purdue), he was able to make connections to land an internship after his first year, where he worked for another Purdue MBA graduate. Shell then offered him full-time employment after graduation. Matt will be working in Shell's Downstream North America business as a Supply and Distribution Negotiator.

"The Purdue MBA allowed me to completely change the trajectory of my career," he says. "I needed rigorous training in how to work with data, and through my classes and internship I gained the knowledge and experience I needed.

"I plan to stay at Shell a long time. Purdue has put me in a position to succeed and thrive in that environment, and I'm grateful for the experience."
