Papa Charlie's, Inc.
Charlie Martin is President and Chief Operating Officer of Papa Charlie’s, a privately held Chicago based company and the leading manufacturer and brand of Italian roast beef, “Chicago’s famous beef sandwich”. Papa Charlie’s family inspired food products are distributed at retail, mass merchandiser, club store and food service channels.
From 2003 to 2011, Charlie was President, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of ACH Food Company’s North American Consumer Products Group. ACH is a subsidiary of Associated British Foods, a $15 billion dollar portfolio company based in London, England. ACH is recognized as one of the most significant and diverse edible oils, flavoring, baking brands and specialty food companies in North America. Among its leading consumer brands are Mazola, Capullo and Inca branded oils, Argo, Karo and Fleischmann’s baking brands, and Tones, Durkee, Spice Islands, Weber Grill, and French’s flavor brands. ACH maintains businesses and offices in the USA, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico. Through a combination of acquisitions and internal brand development, Charlie helped lead ACH from $285m to $1.2B in revenues becoming one of Associated British Food’s leading profit contributor’s.
Charlie has earned a reputation as a highly capable management executive at conceptualizing and implementing strategic business plans and marketing campaigns, as well as building brands and launching new products. Spanning 30 years, his general management and marketing leadership has cut across a diverse set of consumer branded businesses, distribution and supermarket operations, acquisitions and entrepreneurial ventures.
From 2000-2003, Charlie was President and Chief Operating Officer at Five Continents Ltd. where he doubled company revenues, scaling the ethnic food distribution business and launching a new retail supermarket concept, “Food Harbor, World Fresh Super Market.” Prior to this, Mr. Martin served as Executive Vice President and General Manager of ASE Consumer Products Company, a major division of ConAgra, leading consumer branded refrigerated businesses including Healthy Choice, Butterball, Armour, Swift, and Eckrich. He was Group Vice President of the Frozen Foods Division of Pet, Inc. where he managed businesses including Van de Kamp Seafood Company, Pet Ritz brands, and Old El Paso frozen Mexican products. He played a significant role in the merger of Pet, Inc. with Pillsbury in 1995.
Mr. Martin’s early career included seventeen years with Kraft Foods, Inc., where he held Vice President of Marketing positions for the New Ventures Group, the Frozen Foods Group and the Grocery Products Group. Mr. Martin ultimately achieved the position of Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Promotion for Kraft General Foods, North America.
Mr. Martin serves other businesses and non for profit groups as a strategic and management advisor. In his capacity on the Executive Committee and Board of Junior Achievement of Chicago beginning in 1988, he helped lead the Chicago organization from 24,000 to 450,000 participating students; making it the largest business and educational partnership program in America. He earned a Master’s degree in Marketing and Finance from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Krannert School of Business at Purdue University. He and his wife, MJ, have three sons and reside in Western Springs, Illinois.
