PhD Alumni News

Roger Groves received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Accounting Association in recognition of his work and services in academic accounting and fi nance in the United Kingdom. He is retired from Cardiff University Business School, where he most recently served as the Sir Julian Hodge Professor of Accounting.

Stuart Mestelman of Dundas, Ontario, Canada, has retired from teaching and administration after 39 years as an economics professor at McMaster University. He now holds the position of professor emeritus and continues as the co director of the McMaster Experimental Economics Laboratory.


Gary Sanger, distinguished professor of finance in the Louisiana State University E.J. Ourso College of Business and director of the college’s Securities Markets Analysis Research Training (SMART) Lab, was elected vice president for the 2009 Program of the Southern Finance Association (SFA). In addition to his work with SFA, Sanger serves as a senior consulting editor for the Chartered Financial Analyst Institute.


John Wade was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). With 31 years’ experience in higher education, Wade had served as interim dean since July 2007. He joined EKU as chair of the Department of Economics in 2000 after 23 years as a professor and administrator at Western Carolina University. He has also served as acting associate dean of the college and acting chair of the Department of History.


Kealoha “Kay” Widdows was named the fi rst holder of the John H. Schroeder Interdisciplinary Chair in Economics at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN. Widdows joined the Wabash faculty in 1987 and has also taught economics and statistics in Shah Alam at the Institut Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, the international business school at National Chengchi University in Taipei, and at Waseda University in Japan.


Sunder Ramaswamy recentlyassumed the presidency of the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, CA. Ramaswamy is a former three-term chair of the economics department at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT, where he was Frederick C. Dirks Professor of Economics and acting dean of faculty.

Randy Heron (’95), associate professor of fi nance and a Barbara Schmenner Faculty Fellow at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), and Erik Lie (’96), the Henry B. Tippie Research Professor of Finance at the University of Iowa Tippie College of Business, received the Fama-DFA Prize for the Best Paper in Asset Pricing in the Journal of Financial Economics for their paper on backdating of incentive based stock options.

Claude G. Perkins, MAT (ECON), was appointed as acting president of Virginia Union University during a nationwide search for the president’s position. Perkins recently retired from Albany State University after serving the historically black institution as associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of the graduate school. During his 10 years with the university, he also held positions as dean and professor of the College of Education.


Karl J. Krapek, MSIA, HDR ’98, former president and COO of United Technologies Corp. (UTC), has been elected to the company’s board of directors. Krapek retired from UTC in 2002 and became a cofounder of the Keystone Companies, which develop residential and commercial real estate. He is a director of the Connecticut Bank and Trust Co., Alcatel-Lucent, Prudential Financial, and Visteon.

Michael J. Ziegler, MSM, Brecksville, OH, is now CEO of Valley National Gases LLC.


Jim Mundell, MSIA, was appointed senior vice president and general manager of Nextreme Thermal Solutions’ newly created thermal management products business unit in Durham, NC. Most recently, he was Nextreme’s COO and previously served in executive positions at General Electric, Harris Corp., SCI Systems, and CTS Corp.


Steven J. Ginter, MSM, has joined the Blue Mountain Group at Smith Barney as a fi nancial advisor in Camp Hill, PA. His move follows a successful career in the transportation industry, including 13 years as the vice president of marketing at a subsidiary of YRC Worldwide.


Pat Mater, MSIR, has joined the executive coaching team at Robertson Lowstuter (RIL) in Chicago, IL. An accomplished human resources executive for a number of Fortune 500 companies, Mater will be assisting RIL in executive coaching and development opportunities.

Bullet1984 - 25th Anniversary Year

Sam Szteinbaum, MSM, has joined the board of directors of Asetek, a leading system thermal and acoustic management solution provider to OEMs servicing the gaming, workstation, and performance PC markets. Much of Szteinbaum’s 20-year career was spent at Hewlett-Packard, where he served in a variety of leadership roles in the areas of business development, marketing, fi nance, and general management.


Cheryl W. Snead, MSIA, president and CEO of Banneker Industries Inc., received top honors from the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council. Snead was one of 14 individuals the D.C.-based trade group honored as its 2009 Women’s Business Enterprise Stars. Last year, the U.S. Small Business Administration honored her company as its National Subcontractor of the Year.

Alison Krebs, MSM, recently joined Adayana Industry in Indianapolis, IN, as a senior associate on the Strategy and Research Practice Team. Krebs joins Adayana with more than 15 years of experience with major pharmaceutical and animal-health companies, most recently serving as marketing manager for customer relationship management and the Xigris product at Eli Lilly.


Amelia A. Huntington, MSM, was promoted to COO, North American Operating Division, and president of Schneider Electric USA in Chicago, IL. In her new role, Huntington will have managerial responsibility for the United States, Canada, Mexico, Juno Lighting Group, and several other core-division functions and business operations.

Bullet1994 - 15th Anniversary Year

Tobias J. Moskowitz, MSM, was named the fi rst Fama Family Professor of Finance at the University of Chicago. Moskowitz was recognized by the American Finance Association with its 2007 Fischer Black Prize, which honors the top finance scholar under the age of 40. The award cited his “ingenious and careful use of newly available data to address fundamental questions in finance.”


Maura Scott, MSM (ECON), has joined the University of Kentucky as an assistant professor of marketing in the Gatton College of Business and Economics. She recently earned her PhD from Arizona State University.


Josh Dambacher, MSM, special counsel to Schulte Roth & Zabel International LLP, has transferred to the law firm’s London office from New York. His practice focuses on hedge and private-equity funds, investment advisers and partnerships, regulatory compliance, acquisitions, seed capital, and joint venture arrangements.

John Doumitt, MSM, was promoted to CEO of HemaCare Corp. in Los Angeles, CA, and appointed to the company’s board of directors. He will also continue as general manager, Transfusable Products. Prior to joining HemaCare in 2007, Doumitt’s background included management positions at Activus Healthcare Solutions, Cardinal Health Nuclear Pharmacy Services, and Syncor International.

Ted Jackson, MSM, was promoted from vice president to director at AlixPartners LLP, a Chicago-based business advisory firm offering services to improve corporate performance, execute corporate turnarounds, and provide litigation consulting and forensic accounting services.

Channen Smith, MSM, was awarded a master franchise designation in the Denver, CO, market by Stratus Building Solutions, a nationwide building service and maintenance franchisor. Smith was previously the vice president of Consumer Solutions Services for RelayHealth.


Mary G. Alexander-Conte, MBA, West Lafayette, IN, is an assistant comptroller, payroll and tax, at Purdue University.

P. Thomas Bacher, MBA, Uniontown, OH, is now the director of the University of Akron Press in Akron, OH.

Tyler Evans, IMM, was promoted to director, F22/F119 Engine Program, at Pratt & Whitney Military Engines and Customer Support in East Hartford, CT.


J. Ernest Jutte, MBA, was named associate to the chief of the National Park Service Commercial Services Program in Washington, DC. His responsibilities include program administration, internal fi nance, human resources, information systems, and policy.

Jim Vaca, MBA, is now a vice president at Bank of America in Charlotte, NC.


Brian J. Fuerst, MBA, is a financial analyst with Procter & Gamble in Cincinnati, OH.

Nicholas V. Haywood, MBA, New Albany, IN, is a business analyst for Humana Inc.

Sheana I. Reigle, MBA, Charlotte, NC, is the vice president of quality and a productivity consultant for Bank of America and a member of the Purdue Alumni Club of Charlotte.

Edwin T. Coffman, BSIM, Avondale Estates, GA, retired from Lucent Technologies.


Kenneth Benson, BSIM, has retired after 21 years with Damar Services Inc. in Indianapolis, IN, where he most recently served as director of finance and administration. In 2008, Benson received the Boy Scouts of America’s Silver Beaver Award and the District Award of America from Crossroads of America Council.

Larry M. Kaminski, BSIM, has teamed up with a group of former Purdue football alums known as “Jack’s Boys” to form the Jack Mollenkopf Society (www.jackmollenkopfsociety. com) in honor of the legendary Boilermaker coach.


Gary Naab, BSIM, has retired after 37 years at General Mills and relocated from Minneapolis, MN, to Springfield, MO.


Charles W. McCoy Jr., BSIM, Los Angeles, CA, was elected presiding judge of Los Angeles Superior Court, the world’s largest trial court system, for a two-year term.

Gary G. Crowden, BSIM, Centreville, VA, received a certifi cate and medal for his participation in the Middle East peace endeavor from the Norwegian Nobel Institute, which awards the Nobel Peace Prize.


Donald R. Schneck, BSIM, North Canton, OH, rode the Boilermaker Special with his family at the 2008 Timken Grand Parade of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival in Canton, OH.


Thomas A. Dobberstein, BSIM, is managing partner of the Indiana/ Kentucky/Cincinnati Region for Thrivent Financial For Lutherans and resides in Fishers, IN. He previously served as managing partner of Thrivent’s Nebraska Region.

Kenneth S. Evens, BSIM, Greenfield, IN, has his own firm, Evens Time Inc., which recently completed the installation of parking control equipment for the new terminal at Indianapolis International Airport.

Gary Lehman, BSIM, was appointed to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education by Gov. Mitch Daniels. He will represent District 4 through June 2012. Lehman is the president and CEO of Fairfi eld Manufacturing Co. in Lafayette, IN, the largest independent gear manufacturer in North America.


William Heath, BSIM, was named northeast regional sales manager for iTravelInsured, a division of International Medical Group based in Indianapolis, IN.


Michael F. Bloom, BSIM, Appleton, WI, is the vice president of commercial lending at Home Federal Savings Bank.

Fred J. Day, BSIM, Cicero, IN, is a group sales consultant at Wells Fargo I.S. in Indianapolis.

William H. Hastings, BSIM, was appointed president and CEO of Magellan Petroleum Corp. in Hartford, CT. He most recently served as president of Nova Atlantic Group LLC after 26 years with Marathon Oil.


Linda Bishop, BSIM, is the president of Thought Transformation in Atlanta, GA, and has published her fi rst book, Selling in Tough


James Mosch, BSIM, was promoted to executive vice president of DENTSPLY International, a leader in the professional dental products industry. Mosch joined the company in 1994 and most recently served as senior vice president of its business development and the endodontic franchise.


Mary Jane Chew, BSM, is a writer in the Office of the President at Purdue University’s West Lafayette campus.


Gregory J. Hayes, BS (ECON), was elected senior vice president and CFO of United Technologies Corp. (UTC) in Hartford, CT. Hayes previously served UTC’s offi ce of the CFO as vice president, Accounting and Controls and Investor Relations.

John Schmitt, BSM, Floyds Knobs, IN, is the owner of Vision First in Louisville, KY.

William Sinunu, BSM, New York, NY, has launched www.GloballyHip.com, which provides cultural IQ tests, cultural personality profiles, and a series of cross-cultural programs to enhance global understanding.


Janet Easton Kirkman, BSIM, Scottsdale, AZ, is celebrating her 15th year running her own formal fashion design alteration business.

Bill Crawford, BSM, recently relocated from Milwaukee, WI, to Atlanta, GA, to join HD Supply as vice president of finance, operations, and sourcing. Crawford’s fi nance career has spanned 17 years with a variety of companies, including General Electric, Arrow Electronics, and Rockwell Automation.

Emerson C. Moser, BSM, writes, “I’ve accepted a new position as assistant general counsel of General Cable Corp., an international manufacturing company located in Highland Heights, KY, a suburb of Cincinnati. I previously held the same position with NIBCO Inc. in Elkhart, IN.”

Brad R. Todd, BSM, Westfield, IN, relocated back to Indiana to take a position within human resources at Roche Diagnostics.


Jessica Bellamy, BSM, Fishers, IN, is manager, internal audit, for the Steak n Shake Co.

Skylar L. Gauss, BSM, writes, “Since graduation, I’ve been following my other true passion — flying. Currently, I’m a first officer on the EMB-145 for American Eagle Airlines based out of O’Hare. It’s a fun time, but with fuel prices climbing and the industry shrinking, I’m sure glad I have a BSM from Krannert.”

James J. Lampas, BSM, and his wife, Mary, finished a nearly five month trek on the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. They hiked the trail to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project.
