Why Krannert?

Purdue’s HR program is one of few that is housed within the business school. Unlike some of my new hire peers from other schools, I got to practice working alongside other functions like Operations and Finance. The role of an HR Manager is to partner with the business leader. I can do that best if I understand the business. Thus, Krannert’s core business classes as well as the opportunity to work on teams with my MBA peers was incredibly helpful in preparing me for my job.

Tell us about your experiences at Krannert.

The highlight of my Krannert experience was my role as SHRM [Society of Human Resource Managers] President. It was my first time to manage others! The role gave me an opportunity to set a vision and support the board in bringing our strategy to life.

My mid-week saving grace was social hour. By Wednesday afternoons, I needed a break from meetings and classes, and I loved having time carved out on my calendar to hang out with my classmates. Also, I can’t resist the smell of popcorn!

The HR spring break trip to Budapest brought our class closer together and we came back with some hilarious memories.  I highly recommend going on at least one global trip.

Charity Ball was a tone of fun…both times! I was on the marketing committee via MVP [Management Volunteer Program], so I sold tickets to my classmates during the weeks leading up to the event. Hitting the dance floor with all my friends was a blast!

The Movember competition was a super fun way to enjoy my last module at Krannert.  I took it upon myself to create an avenue for the ladies of Krannert to get engaged in the historically male-dominated movement by identifying “Stash Sidekicks” for each of the participating men. It created a fun sense of community and competition among our class and we raised thousands of dollars.

Are you a career changer, career enhancer or a new professional?

New Professional

What was your internship?

P&G – Family Care, Cincinnati

What did you take away from your internship experience?

The power of influencing! To be a successful HR Manager, it is critical that I gain alignment to my proposals and engage all stakeholders from the start.

What did you enjoy about your internship?

Building my network. My work plan gave me the space to meet people across the HR function and at various levels. I asked for help on my projects and also gained perspective on what a career is like at P&G.

How did you find your new career?

P&G recruited at the Krannert Graduate Career Fair. I was offered an internship position during the fall of my first year. Then, on my last day of my internship, I was offered a fulltime position.

What drew you to this company?

The people. P&G only hires sharp, driven people. I do my best work when I am surrounded by people who push me to think smarter and to find the “best in class” solutions. P&G people motivate me!

What will be the challenges of your new career?

The biggest difference between an internship and fulltime role within P&G HR is during an internship, you get to focus on 5 projects. In a fulltime HR role, you have projects plus the day-to-day operations. Thus, the greatest challenge is learning a new balance.

What courses from the MSHRM program have you found beneficial?

Organizational Change Management, Employment Law, Industrial Relations

Advice for someone looking to work at the company you are working at?

The two qualities I consistently see in successful HR people at P&G are ownership and collaboration. When preparing for an interview, think of examples in which you have owned and led a process/project as well as examples of how you involved key stakeholders and worked with your teammates.
