How did you best prepare for your internship experience?

I’m in the Pathways Operations Managers Internship program at Amazon working with the Customer Service team. Krannert is known globally for its focus on Operations Management and for its analytical approach. Both these factors have helped me perform better in my role. Apart from this, several Krannert Alumni have been successfully placed at Amazon in the Pathways Operations Manager full time role; I reached out to a few of them and they gave me their valuable views on the culture of Amazon and the expectations from interns. Finally, I read “The Everything Store” which is the book on Amazon’s growth.

What are some outcomes the organization will have from your internship experience?

My project is based on removing ambiguity in measuring employee productivity in the Customer Service department and creating a streamlined process. Along with that I create new tools and processes to better manage some aspects of Customer Service Associate’s day-to-day activities. The project impacts Operations, Finance, Business Intelligence and Capacity Planning.

What will you take away from your internship experience?

The practical implementation of concepts studied in the Operations class helped me understand them better. But more than just operations, I have learned valuable leadership principles and a different school of thought than I have been exposed to in my previous work experiences. Amazon aims to be the  “earth’s most customer centric company.” The customer obsession of the people that work here is simply amazing!

What has been the most challenging part of your internship?

Dealing with ambiguity. It is an Amazon leadership principle and for good reason. Since the company is growing at a very rapid pace, there are a number of variables to be considered when dealing with data at a macro level. Sometimes when results of two data tables don’t match, one has to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch. It’s an extremely time consuming, yet an educating process.

What do you enjoy about your internship?

The people and the culture. Amazon believes in “Work hard. Have fun. Create history” and this reflects in everyone around me. We have a lot of fun, including nerf dart fights, playing pranks on each other and pulling each others’ legs as much as we want. There’s a lot of laughter. But when it comes to work, everyone is dedicated and motivated.

How did you find your internship? What drew you into this company?

I was interested in Amazon, even before I reached Krannert. Amazon, the world leader in e-commerce, is just turning 20 this year. It has had a rapid growth and is a disruptor in any business that it enters into. This really attracted me towards the company. Amazon has also been recruiting from Krannert for a very long time. I got an opportunity to meet senior leaders from the Fulfilment and the Customer Service departments at an information session held at the Krannert school. I was also able to visit one of the largest Fulfilment Centers of Amazon, located in Indianapolis. When interviews were conducted for internship roles in October 2014, I was one of 5 candidates who was offered an internship role at the company.

What has surprised you about your internship experience?

I was really surprised by the “no boundaries” culture at Amazon. My past two work experiences have been with firms that were very hierarchical and had a lot of red tape. Coming to Amazon was a much needed and a very refreshing change. What surprised me the least was the motivation of the people around me. I had assumed, observing the pace of growth of the company, that it chooses highly driven people to work and this turned out to be true.

What courses from the MBA program have you found beneficial?

As I mentioned earlier, Krannert is known for its Operations Management and this certainly helped me. I am really interested in the analytical approach and a course on “Spreadsheet Modeling” was very helpful. I’ve used spreadsheets in almost all my work at Amazon and having taken the Spreadsheet Modeling course in the Spring semester made me very proficient with not only using the Microsoft Excel tool but also visualizing what to do with a lot of data.

What courses do you plan to take upon returning to Purdue?

I plan to take more courses related to Analytics, like Advanced Business Analytics. I’ve done a lot of process improvement work at Amazon, so I am interested in the Six Sigma & Total Quality Management course. I intend to take Global Supply Chain Management and Strategic Sourcing & Procurement to fulfill my Operations and Supply Chain concentration.

Advice for someone looking to work at the company you are interning at?

Get in touch with alumni. People who have experience working at or interning at Amazon. It’s a very fast paced culture and it’s not for everyone. If you want to “Work Hard, Have Fun and Create History,” then you should definitely look up Amazon.
