How did you best prepare for your internship experience?

The best way that I prepared for my internship was to be engaged in my coursework, as well as utilize my network. I made the effort to reach out to my classmates and learn from their previous professional experience to better prepare myself. Additionally, I connected with MSHRM alumni to better understand what made them successful in their HR internships so that I knew where to best aim my focus in preparing for my summer.

What are some outcomes the organization will have from your internship experience?

This summer, I worked on the Talent Management and Development Team with specific focus on CH2M Hill’s approach to corporate learning. My end business recommendations will increase effectiveness of learning throughout the company, as well as direct how the company should invest in its learning and development programs for the 2016 year and beyond.

What will you take away from your internship experience?

I will take away so much from my experience. I had a wonderful internship and am beyond thankful for the opportunities I was given. The most important thing I learned was how important it is for us as HR representatives to understand our business and what drives the bottom line. The better we, in HR or any function, are able to understand how our business profits, we can contribute to the success of our company.

What has been the most challenging part of your internship?

The most challenging part of my summer internship was only being there for 12 weeks. As with any new project, there is always a learning curve. I wish that I would be able to have more time with my company so that I could learn and develop even more.

What did you enjoy about your internship?

I specifically enjoyed the encouragement to grow your network at CH2M Hill. From day one, the interns were encouraged to meet with senior leadership and build our networks. There was great exposure throughout the experience. Being able to pick the brains of the most respected and senior level individuals at the company made the internship experience very fulfilling.

How did you find your internship? What drew you into this company?

I found out about my company through Krannert and classmates that have interned or accepted full time offers with the company. What drew me to the company was their values and ethics. CH2M Hill is repeatedly recognized and awarded as one of the most ethical companies, and this was seen in their recruiters. I received a very genuine feel from the company and its employees and knew right away that was the type of place I wanted to start my journey.

What has surprised you about your internship experience?

What surprised me the most about my internship was how integrated I became within the entire HR team, not just my function. The company does a great job of helping you connect with the entire department so that you can meet individuals working in all fields and explore your passions within HR. What surprised me the least was discovering that the individuals are every bit as genuine as they appeared upon my first interaction.

What courses from the MSHRM program have you found beneficial?

I found the following courses to be beneficial: Business Analytics, Microeconomics, Compensation, Staffing Tools, Employment Law, Talent Management of Gender and Diversity, Industrial Relations

What courses do you plan to take upon returning to Purdue?

HR Analytics, Training and Development, Finance, Accounting

Advice for someone looking to work at the company you are interning at?

I would recommend that the individual grow their business acumen, as well as their understand of talent management on a global scale as the company continues to expand into new countries.
