A cross-disciplinary team of students recently took home the top prize in the Purdue Business Case Competition, which was open to all full-time undergraduates on the West Lafayette Campus.
Teams of three to five freshman and sophomore students applied their in-class learning to a real-word challenge and presented recommendations to consultants. The event also helped students build their social and professional networks and bolster their resumes.
The first-place team, which won $1,250 per member, was dubbed Purdue Solutions and comprised of Omar Abdel-Reheem (Management), Chi Lin (Exploratory Studies), Oliver Joo Sung Johnson (Liberal Arts), and Parker Joseph Jeffrey (Mechanical Engineering). Abdel-Reheem also won a $250 individual award as outstanding case presenter.
The second-place team, called The Impostors, was comprised of Aochuan Shen (Management), Jianfeng Sun (Management), Yahan Kou (Science), and Yanxin Yu (Science). Placing third was BE Consulting, which was comprised of Bora Kaya (Management) and Emir Apaydin (Liberal Arts).
“The case challenge revolved around a struggling drone company that needed to reduce costs, increase revenue, secure data, and enter a new market,” says Abdel-Reheem. “Case competitions greatly enhance our academic experience by teaching us teamwork, collaboration, strategic thinking, and how to apply classroom knowledge to a real-world problem.”
