Behind the Mask of a Protect Purdue Student Ambassador

Saturday, October 10, 2020

Student holding protect Purdue pinI was unsure of what the fall semester would be like when I returned to campus. I had honestly thought that everything would be back to normal by now, and I would be cheering on the Boilermakers at Ross-Ade like any other year. As August drew closer, the Protect Purdue Pledge was announced and new rules were put into place. Among the flood of emails, there was an advertisement to be a Protect Purdue Student Ambassador. As a Marketing and General Communications major, I jumped at the opportunity to work with Purdue Marketing and Media. I was delighted to be accepted into this group of over 200 students, and attended an online training shortly after.

Protect Purdue Student Ambassadors have a variety of tasks andresponsibilities, all in an effort to enforce the Protect Purdue Pledge and keep campus open until Thanksgiving. The first few weeks of school, you may have seen individuals in matching grey shirts handing out face masks and Protect Purdue swag. You may have recognized these individuals handing out rewards, such as Wiley cookies and Discount Den coupons, to those who were doing an especially good job at protecting Purdue. The ambassadors have also been present as volunteers at locations on campus offering flu shots and on social media sharing information and advice.

covid-collage.jpgThe ambassadors are divided into teams of ten or so, and these teams meet once a week to come up with ideas to engage the student body in the Protect Purdue Pledge. All the teams come together once a month to receive updates and share ideas. These can vary from hosting COVID-safe events on campus to creating and distributing posters and signs in every classroom. Ambassadors may also be requested to speak to classes and student groups about what to do and what not to do to be COVID-safe. I am personally very excited to help create content for @lifeatpurdue, meet new people, and do all that I can to keep myself and others safe from COVID-19!
