Meet juliana donoso abuawad

Major: psychological sciences

Why did you choose Krannert?

I knew Purdue was the place for me because of the support and opportunities available to all students. Being an international student made it hard to find a university with good opportunities for me. Even though my major is part of the College of Health and Human Sciences, I decided to pursue an HR minor in Krannert because of the doors it would open for me. Being a part of Krannert has allowed me to meet new people and connect with them in ways I never imagined.

What is your favorite Purdue memory so far?

I’ve enjoyed every moment I’ve had at Purdue because I was able to find people that I consider my second family. Making friends has impacted my time here and every memory I make with them at Purdue is one I will cherish forever.

Why did you decide to join the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA)?

I decided to join ALPFA because I wanted to have a more active role in empowering Latinx students. ALPFA is an amazing organization that allows all of its members to connect and support each other. I wanted to be part of a community that supported me and I found that in ALPFA.

What has been the biggest benefit of being part of ALPFA?

The biggest benefit of being a part of ALPFA has been meeting all the different students. Through our very different paths, we’ve found ways to connect and help each other find opportunities not just at Purdue, but also in the professional workforce.

Describe the major events ALPFA does every year.

We host two main events every year that are both professional and social. Every fall we usually help our members connect with different companies by hosting networking events, guest speakers, and company info-sessions. During spring, we offer some opportunities to network with companies and recruiters, but we mostly focus on social events. We usually use the spring semester to help members know each other and create meaningful connections within ALPFA.

Through our different events, ALFPA can help students get summer internships, full-time jobs, or just network with different people in their area of interest.

What has ALPFA added to your college experience both socially and from a professional development standpoint?

This club has helped me create bonds with other Purdue students with whom I would’ve never connected. ALPFA helps its members work on their professional skills through the different events it hosts, and I feel like I’ve also gained a lot of growth through these events.

Why would you recommend ALPFA to other students?

ALPFA is a very diverse organization that is not exclusive to Latinx and Hispanic students, which is why I believe anyone can take advantage of being a member. This organization will help you network with different students, university staff, companies, and recruiters which can all help you advance professionally. Through our different events, ALFPA can help students get summer internships, full-time jobs, or just network with different people in their area of interest. I recommend this club to other students because it provides all the resources needed to succeed professionally.

What other extra-curricular activities do you participate in? What have you learned from those experiences?

I am also an ambassador for the College of Health and Human Sciences and a member of the HHS Student Council. Through these organizations, I was able to connect with different students and make sure they feel represented. By helping students, faculty, and the administration connect, I can help provide better opportunities for the student body overall.

Making friends has impacted my time here and every memory I make with them at Purdue is one I will cherish forever.

Other than clubs, what has made a major difference to you when it comes to your college experience?

The people I’ve met at Purdue have made a major difference when it comes to my college experience. Not only have I been able to find amazing friends at Purdue, but also create meaningful relationships with faculty and staff. I am grateful to all my professors and different people who supported me while I pursued my professional goals.

Tell us about your internship(s), and/or tell us about what you will be doing after graduation.

This summer I will be an HR intern at Cummins. I am excited to be a part of such an amazing organization and ALPFA played a major role in connecting me with this company. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to further develop my professional skills in an actual work setting.
