MS Global Supply Chain Management Student Experience

Experiential Learning at the Daniels School of Business

Information for students

What is the student experience like?

Student teams are responsible for acting as consultants to an organization on an operations-management related problem. Teams will meet with the partner company up-front to gather requirements and understand the business problem, then meet weekly with the faculty advisor to discuss progress and plan upcoming efforts. At the end of the term, teams present their recommendations to the partner company.

How are projects chosen?

Faculty line up a variety of projects from partner companies, spanning a range of areas in supply chain and operations management. At the beginning of the term, students provide both their project preferences and relevant biographical information, and the faculty advisor uses this information to form teams. In recent terms, all students have gotten the opportunity to work on either their first or second choice project.

Do I have to be in the GSCM master's program to participate?

Students in graduate programs other than the MSGSCM program may participate with faculty permission. To be eligible, students should have an interest in operations research and a demonstrated ability to produce high-quality work. For more information, contact Dr. Amy David, Clinical Professor of Management, at amydavid@purdue.edu.

What makes for a good project from a corporate partner?

  • Projects may be on a variety of topics related to operations management, including strategic sourcing, distribution planning, logistics, facility layout, location strategy, inventory management, production planning, quality management, sustainability, etc.
  • Projects should focus on analysis of data to reach a managerial recommendation.
  • Projects should be of a scope manageable for a team to complete in a single term.
  • Corporate partners should be able to provide information as needed to student teams and be responsive to questions throughout the duration of the project (students and faculty assigned to a project will sign non-disclosure agreements as required).
  • Partnering companies need not be local. Projects outside of the Greater Lafayette area may be completed remotely or may include a combination of travel and remote work, as negotiated prior to the project kick-off.
